How We Evaluate

  • We evaluate each nonprofit’s mission alignment, its commitment to democratic engagement, and its role in fostering civic participation and public discourse.

    • How actively does the nonprofit promote democratic participation among its members or the communities it serves?

    • Does it engage in activities that foster dialogue, inclusivity, and the exchange of ideas among diverse groups?

    • Does it prioritize the empowerment of marginalized or underrepresented communities in democratic activities?

  • We assess the degree to which each nonprofit is embedded in and engages with the community it serves. This includes relationship-building, collaboration, and accessibility of participation opportunities.

    • Does it have deep, meaningful involvement in its community, including local, regional, or national partnerships?

    • Does the nonprofit ensure that its leadership and governance structure is inclusive and representative of the communities it serves?

    • Does it actively work to identify and remove barriers to democratic participation, such as accessibility issues, discriminatory practices, or lack of resources for marginalized members of its community?

  • We evaluate how effective each nonprofit is at creating tangible, measurable social change through advocacy work, policy influence, and community engagement programs.

    • Does the nonprofit advocate for democratic principles such as equal rights, free and fair elections, and strengthening democratic processes?

    • How significant is its influence on public policy and democratic reforms?

    • Does the nonprofit collaborate with government agencies, civil society organizations, and other nonprofits to extend its impact?

  • We evaluate each nonprofit’s internal practices, transparency, governance, and depth of field expertise

    • Does the nonprofit adhere to transparent governance standards, such as conflict-of-interest policies, board accountability, and regular financial audits?

    • Are annual reports, audits, and strategic plans publicly available and easy to understand?

    • Does the organization demonstrate a high level of expertise in its field?

    • Does its leadership reflect the diversity of the communities served?

Our team carefully assesses each organization’s performance in the above categories, granting them a score from 1 - 100. We only recommend organizations that receive a rating of 75 or higher.

We use a weighted evaluative framework. Each category is assigned a weight based on its relevance to democratic advancement, with the greatest emphasis placed on Impact and Values & Mission. Scores are derived using structured rubrics to promote fairness and consistency across diverse types of organizations.

All ratings are determined by our expert panel, which includes a social impact executive, a senior researcher, and a PhD-level political scientist. Their evaluations are supported by data from nonprofit filings and trusted third-party sources like Charity Navigator, ProPublica, and the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance.
